I recently
attended Comic-Con International, 2003.
When I got
into ball room 20, I saw Kevin Smith talking about Jersey Girl. It was
amazing, he couldn’t get through one sentence without saying “f*ck.” He didn’t
really have much to say, he just kind of got up on stage, and blabbered on and
on.
Then it
was New Line’s turn to shine.
They
brought up the guys behind Freddy vs. Jason. The people there
representing it were: Robert Englund (Freddy), Hen Kirzinger (Jason), and
director Ronny Yu. They showed some super, really cool footage that I was just
amazed by. It actually looks kind of funny if you ask me. They showed a clip of
these two kids smoking in a crop field, who turn around and see Jason behind
them. They say “Hey man” and ask “what’s going on.” Jason pauses for about five
seconds, then grabs one of the guys heads and twists it around. Now that’s what
I’m talking about! The other guy sets Jason on fire and runs like hell. He runs
back to camp, when a fire filled Jason throws his flaming machete through his
chest. Jason then kills a bunch of other people. Typical slasher-horror stuff,
but awesome anyways.
After
that, New Line had a segment on The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
It looks just O.K. They had a bunch of guests, like Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins),
Sean Astin (Sam Gamgee), and Andy Serkis (Gollum). Andy was extremely funny on
stage. They didn’t show much of Return of the King except for a giant
battle scene, which wasn’t even very long.
Then they
showed a new trailer of the movie Underworld. The stars that were there
were Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman. They had a brand poster of
Underworld, that had never been seen before, which looked pretty cool, but
not mind-blowing. The promotional clips and prints I’ve seen remind me of the
old W.B. show “Birds of Prey.” Kate Beckinsale looked great.
They also
showed some stuff from Hellboy. It looks pretty damn bad, if I do say so
myself; it’ll probably be one of the worst superhero movies ever. The monsters
aren’t even done, using CGI, they are just a bunch of guys in costumes. The
footage they showed wasn’t bad, though. When Hellboy smashed a car in one of the
clips they showed, it was pretty radical. Some random guy in the audience
questioned the people on stage if Hellboy was going to eat pancakes in the
movie. Where the hell did that come from?
Then Avi
Arad and Laura Ziskin came out and told us that Sam Raimi had a giant fever and
wouldn’t be attending Comic Con. We were pissed, big time! But all of our
sadness was mitigated when THEY BUSTED OUT A HUGE DOCTOR OCTOPUS TEASER
POSTER. HE LOOKS AWESOME! HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE I WANTED HIM TO! As if the
poster wasn’t enough already, they then showed us a clip from Spiderman 2.
It showed all of these surgeons operating on Doc Ock’s tentacles. His tentacles
start to move and start kicking all of the surgeons’ asses. It was one of the
coolest things I have ever seen in my entire life! It is exactly what a super
villain should look like when he is doing evil things! The rockin’ ‘Doc Ock’
poster is below.

As always, Comic-Con offered a great time, sneak peaks at great
looking movies,
and most importantly - great comics!
