Friday the 13th, Halloween,
Nightmare on Elm Street, Tales from the Crypt—what do they all have
in common? They are all famous horror movies/series. Horror movies were made to,
most importantly, make money; but also to scare the living daylights out of kids
and make them stay up all night, afraid to fall asleep, thinking that a killer
or monster would come after them them. Even though these kids knew that they
would get scared watching these movies, though, they would still do so, and
await their releases eagerly.

Freddy,
the owner of the Nightmare on Elm Street series is an insane monster,
with a deathly claw that always scares the living daylights out of me. He
attacks little children in their dreams. When kids fall asleep, Freddy strikes.
When the children die in their dream, they die in the real world, as well.
Freddy’s trademarks are his sweater, hat, and of course, his famous claw.

Michael
Myers, the owner of the Halloween series, is much scarier than Freddy. He is my
favorite killer of all-time. He doesn’t care who he kills, just as long as he
gets who he wants to get, while doing so. His usual choice of weapon is a nice.
In Halloween 4 he did impale a woman with a giant shotgun, though. Tough
luck! His movies are probably the most consistently creepy. You can never see
Michael’s face, either. He wears his famous white mask over it. If you look
closely in Halloween 5, though, in the beginning when Michael gets up out
of a bed, you can see his face (some of it is hidden in the background shadows,
however). Going against most people’s opinions, I must say, Halloween 3
was awful.

Mr. Jason
Voorhees, is the owner of the Friday the 13th series. His
weapon of choice is a machete. It is so sharp, it could cut steel in half. He
loves to terrorize campers at Camp Crystal Lake. His hockey mask adds a nice
(and killer) touch to his physical appearance. Jason also had a song written
about him, by Alice Cooper. How cool! Out of all the horror-movie killers, this
dude freaks me out the most. I’m sorry buddy, but Jason X was terrible.

Tales
from the Crypt is much different than your average horror flick. It was
based off of the old Tales from the Crypt comic books. The movie, though,
is quite different than its original source. First, they came out with a
television show, featuring the Crypt Keeper. The show featured different tales
about zombies, killers, ghosts, monsters etc. This television show, which
inspired the film, is now on the AMC channel on Friday nights.

Next on
our list of terror is The Exorcist, which is known by most as the
scariest film of all-time. In it, a vulnerable young girl named Reagan is
possessed by the Satanist powers of Pazuzu. When we watch it, we can’t help but
wonder if we could be possessed by Satanist powers. One of us could be that
little girl. This girl did not do anything to deserve this. Some of the
screenshots of her possessed by Pazuzu are so scary and gruesome that I
hesitated to include the picture above, taken from the movie, in this essay.
The Exorcist is terrifying.

The latest
horror movie to see release is coming out this month. It is called Freddy Vs.
Jason, and it will showcase a battle-royal between these two legends of
horror. The filmmakers attempted to make it frightening, but as expected, it
looks hilariously corny. I saw a clip of it at Comic-Con, which was laughed at
by everyone who saw it. The stars and director reassured us, though, that it
would be half-comic, half-horror, like many movies of the genre. As for the
winner? It’s gotta be Jason!
Horror is a vital genre to the
art of cinema. It will always take a small place, in every moviegoer’s heart.
